Commissions

Murray and Floss

December 31st, 2011

Murray and Floss in the garden. Two good looking dogs, a Sheltie and  a little Japanese Spitz. Floss was quite a challenge to paint being all white.

Murray had lots of colour in his coat.

Gladstone and Disraeli

October 5th, 2011

I’ve just delivered another commission. Gladstone and Disraeli are such a gorgeous pair. A Cocker Spaniel and a Miniature Short haired Dachshund. I loved painting these two, they have so much character in their faces and they’re clearly very close friends. Their coats are full beautiful colour too which makes them such a joy to paint.

Satchmo and Tatoosh–A Bullmastiff Painting

August 27th, 2011

I have several bullmastiff paintings on the go at the moment. I do love painting them! Here’s a finished commission, Satchmo and Tatoosh. This is a painting full of colour as the two dogs sit looking out over the lake. the wonderful warm tones of their coats make a fabulous contrast with the blues and greens in the water.

Here’s how it was painted.

painting stage 1 of the bullmastiff dog painting

The under painting was done in burnt sienna with the dogs drawn in burnt umber. I picked out the main details of their faces and then started on the first coats of oil paint in the lake.

painting stage 2 of the bullmastiff dog painting

As the lake was drying I started on the dogs themselves.

Here’s a close up of the painting at this stage showing work starting on his face.

The finished painting. It took several layers in both the lake and the dogs to complete the painting, building up the layers of colour to create the richness of the final piece. The blue greens really make the warm reds and golds in their coats glow!

The Chase

December 10th, 2010

I loved painting these two Labradoodles playing on the beach. The expressions on their faces as Lucee races off with the ball and Rusty chases her across the sand. They are really having fun!

Liam And Truman In The Snow

March 16th, 2010

Another bullmastiff painting, this is Liam and Truman In The Snow. I love bullmastiffs standing in the snow, there’s something about the colour of their coats against the whiter snow and the blue, lilac shadows that is so lovely to paint. These two handsome boys are father and son.

Portrait of Chet

September 23rd, 2009

This is an oil painting of Chet, a bullmastiff. This was a recent commission. She’s posing with a stick and has a nice half profile. I like the warm colour of her coat against the blue grey of the boards of the decking.

Bonnie and Fred

September 8th, 2009

This is a digital painting I created for an article. The brief was painting pets and these two show how our pets form family relationships, not just with us, but also with each other. German Shepherds are very loyal and protective dogs and Bonnie here is looking after little Fred.

If you’d like to see how it was painted look out for in next month’s Corel Painter magazine (issue 34) This image may not be used in any way whatsoever without the written permission of the artist.
With many thanks to Mary who let me use her beautiful animals as models for this piece!
